Since childhood, he had a strong academic bent of mind. Early demise of his father inculcated a positive outlook to life. He inspired countless people coming to his contact, to follow a path of hard work, struggle and dedication for achieving ideals of success. Though out his life, he followed the principles of honesty and truthfulness.
Dr. Haren Choudhury passed matriculation examination in 1959 and graduated from Cotton college in 1963 under Gauhati University. He joined as a teacher in a high school for a brief period and then completed his masters degree in statistics in 1968 with Gold Medal for securing first class first position. Prior to joining GU he also got enrolled with Assam Engineering College for a while.
After completing education, he joined Gauhati university as a lecturer, in the department of Statistics. He become the Head of Department from 11th March 1994 to 31st March 1997 and acted as Hon. Director Population Research Centre, GU from 1st April 1994 to 31st March 1997. After completing 33 years of glorious service, he retired from active service on 31 August 2006, after completing 3 years of extension. During his tenure at Gauhati University, he also was actively involved in various institutional and organizational matters of Gauhati University. He was elected the president of Gauhati University Teacher’s Association and a member of the GU Academic Council. His areas of interest were Socio-Economic demographic studies, Income connation & property, Time-series & econometrics. He taught Probability, Time-series Applied Statistics & Econometrics.
Dr. Haren Choudhury, was also involved in academic affairs of several other premier Universities & Colleges of NE India including Tezpur University, Manipur University, Arunachal University, and Dibrugarh University. He was in the Governing Boards of several colleges of Assam, besides being actively associated with University Grants Commission, Assam Public Service Commission and State Finance Commissions. He was the Executive Committee Member of Arunachal University till recently and also acted as Chairman of Shishu Kalyan Vidya Niketan, an educational organization devoted to promoting value based education system in India.
